What is Leadership 21?

  • Leadership - the crucial need for churches

  • 21 - the next century is here; the future is now

Turning the leadership challenge into an opportunity requires a commitment of resources. Leadership21 offers a strategy for meeting these challenges.

The Leadership 21 initiative will strengthen our endowment to establish a growing stream of income to resource future leaders engaging in life-shaping events.

What is the Need?
Summer Missionaries and Interns
Missouri consistently fields a large number of summer missionaries with CBF's student.go program. We provide a $1000 stipend to supplement the modest payment these students receive from CBF.

CBF of Missouri is a leading state in summer missionary involvement, fielding a group of 5 or 6 students each of the last 2 years -- as many or more than other larger states.

In addition, CBF of Missouri has helped place summer interns in churches. These are valuable experiences for students considering a call to vocational ministry.

Seminary Students
The Missouri Fellowship encourages our students to utilize Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Ten CBF of Missouri students attended Central Seminary in 2008-2009. Many of these students would be good candidates for scholarships from CBF of Missouri.

Lay Leadership
Missouri has pioneered Emerge, an intensive lay-leadership process working with Organizational Health Associates.

Participants in the Emerge process gain a better understanding of their own leadership strengths and style, spiritual formation, church systems, and missional church concepts. Program graduates emerge as more confident decision-makers, more steady supporters to the church staff and more knowledgeable and prepared leaders in times of church planning, growth and conflict.

A total of 17 lay leaders completed Emerge training and are serving as lay leaders in local congregations.

Small Church Pastor Resources
Missouri CBF tries to provide scholarships for pastors of smaller churches and ethnic churches to enlarge the network and energy within the Fellowship.

  • Scholarship for Hispanic pastor and spouse to the CBFMO General Assembly (2006).

  • Scholarship for younger pastor and family to the CBF General Assembly (2007).

Communities of Practice
Missouri CBF encourages conversations among kindred individuals to share ideas, learn from one another, and to plan creatively. Several of these communities are active around the state, including:

  • 12 persons in conversation about church-based collegiate ministry (2006 and 2007).

  • 12 persons in conversations about new church starts (2007 and 2008).

What is the Response?
The Leadership21 goal is twenty-one leadership gifts of $10,000 or more to establish endowments that will provide (life-giving, supportive, supplemental,? )  resources for leadership development opportunities like those listed above.
