Moment or Movement?

My heart continues to be full from the New Baptist Covenant. The theme was built around the Luke 4:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

The response of the people (in v. 22) was simple: "All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips."

But just 7 verses later (ever wonder about how much unrecorded conversations that did not make it into the Bible?), the same people had turned on Jesus when "they got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff."

Such is the risk for you and me at times. The concept of a New Baptist Covenant was a great idea (v 22). The New Baptist Covenant had its detractors and skeptics – "Nice idea, but look who is speaking" (v.29)

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Fellowship Baptists from Missouri in Atlanta. Thanks to pastors who encouraged strong laity participation and made this event an important part of their calendar.

Co-chair Jimmy Allen summed up the unspoken question – was the New Baptist Covenant gathering "a moment" or the start of "a movement?" All of us there return with hope for greater Baptist opportunity of shared ways "to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor." I am more proud to be called a Baptist Christian than I have been in a long time.
