School Supplies Strengthen Relationships on South Dakota Reservations In August 2007 Kathleen Kesner, CBF of Missouri’s Together for Hope–High Plains representative, along with her husband Ray delivered school supplies to five schools on three reservations in South Dakota. The supplies reached about 1,800 students. Office supplies and classroom teaching aids were also incuded in the deliveries. A worker at one school expressed the surprise and gratitude felt by many. "You brought such nice things," she said. "And you gave supplies for every student in the school." Kesner expressed her thanks to all who sent supplies or made a financial contribution this year. "With the money given, I was able to purchase supplies at ‘Back to School’ sales at greatly reduced prices," she noted. "I purchased many, many subject note books, pens and pencils for ten cents each!" Kathleen observes that "school supplies" doesn’t always mean pens and paper but may include such things as first aid supplies and games for cold winter days in schools that do not have a gymnasium. Even though she received requests for these kinds of items later in the school year, financial contributions allowed her to help with these kind of requests as well. Kesner received donations from several churches and individuals in Missouri and many from outside Missouri as well. Kesner is already gathering supplies for the 2008-2009 school year. "This is a great way to help several hundred children. I hope churches will spread the information about this project again this year." |
