Tested. Ready. Change.

Already we recognize those words as indicators we are in for a long year of politics in America. Each word has been carefully researched to trigger hope or fear that connects to a particular candidate. I wondered about myself as 2008 begins.

TESTED: Horatio Spafford wrote "It is Well With My Soul" after two major traumas in his life. The great Chicago Fire of October 1871 ruined him financially. Shortly after, all four of Spafford’s daughters died at sea. Several weeks later, as his own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, he wrote the hymn. Spafford’s faith was tested.

READY: Peter said "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." (NIV)

CHANGE:  Paul noted: "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." As I get older the "black and white" becomes more "gray." The church I am part of is proud of its 165-year heritage. While I embrace that heritage, I pray we can remain a vibrant force within our community.

Political candidates pick and choose code words for campaigns. Christians are called to be each and all. In Fellowship language it is the way we are the presence of Christ among our friends and those we meet.
