KidsHeart Africa Child Development Center Takes Shape

Just a few weeks ago in Kenya’s Coast Province, more than 100 people from the small village of Mpirani gathered around a new building that will soon become an integral part of village life. The building will be home to educational activities for young at-risk children, many of whom have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic in Africa. Other vital community services will be housed in the building as well.

This building — a Child Development Center (CDC) — was built through CBF of Missouri’s KidsHeart Africa initiative with funds donated by Missouri churches and individuals.

"This building is going to make a huge impact on the area," said Harold Phillips, CBF of Missouri coordinator. "I know the Ngerenya community is thankful for all that has been done so far."

Sam and Melody Harrell, CBF field personnel in Kenya, were present at the building’s opening. Sam worked with the village leaders, especially with the Ngerenya Baptist Church there, to identify community leadership and vision for what will happen at the CDC.

A group from Missouri will travel with Phillips to the new CDC site in October. The preliminary itinerary for the 10-day trip is:

  • Oct. 6: Depart for Kenya
  • Oct. 8: Arrive and overnight in Nairobi
  • Oct. 9: Introduction of Nairobi partner ministries
  • Oct. 10: Depart for Coast province via Tsavo West National Park: environmental field component and overnight in game park
  • Oct. 11: Travel to Kilifi, Coast province
  • Oct. 12: Meet the Ngerenya community and supporting churches; conduct activities with children (VBS/basic medical/recreation); during lunch, team members will visit different homes for noon meal
  • Oct. 13: Tree planting and other activities on school compound
  • Oct. 14: Worship and celebration with community
  • Oct. 15: Return to Nairobi for departure
