Missourians Enjoy State Meeting and Historic Moments at General Assembly In a historic city, more than 2,500 Fellowship Baptists gathered for an historic event June 28-29. The 17th annual Cooperative Baptist Fellowship was held in Washington, D.C., for the first time and featured a first-ever joint gathering with the American Baptist Churches USA. Fellowship Baptists celebrated religious freedom, addressed global concerns of poverty, hunger, HIV/AIDS, and participated in events featuring topics such as spiritual formation, congregational life, the missional church and social justice. CBF of Missouri held its state meeting on Thursday afternoon, with about 75 in attendance. The group heard reports from several partners and CBF field personnel, including Molly Marshall, president of Central Baptist Theological Seminary; Larry Ballew, who serves with CBF in Macau China; and Tim Myrick, an Independence Missouri native who has served with CBF in Jordan. Information about Emerge, KidsHeart Africa, Fellowship Gatherings, the Ministers Retreat, and other events was shared as well. Fellowship Baptists gave more than $22,000 to the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Offering for Religious Liberty and Human Rights. The Baptist World Alliance David Coffey receives one-third of the Offering proceeds; the other two-thirds is administered through the Fellowship through partnering with organizations with existing initiatives relating to human rights and, specifically, religious liberty issues. Throughout the Assembly excitement built
for another gathering of Baptists – the New Baptist Covenant
Celebration, which will be held Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2008 in Atlanta and
feature Baptists from more than 36 organizations. |
