Missouri Students Serve with CBF through Student.Go

Each summer undergraduate and graduate students serve across the country and around the world, working alongside Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Global Missions field personnel and Fellowship partners. Through the Fellowship’s Student.Go program, students can spend a summer or semester involved in hands-on missions.

This summer, more than 30 students will serve, including 6 from Missouri, more than any other state. Our state’s increased involvement in Student.Go is due, in part, to the efforts of a College Ministry Task Force that first convened last July. At that meeting, the group set statewide goals for Student.Go and local church internships

"The response from Missouri students has just been amazing," says CBF of Missouri coordinator Harold Phillips. "Almost 20 percent of the Student.Go group is from Missouri."

Another significant reason for this response is the dynamic work of Regeneration Collegiate Christian Ministries on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Three of Missouri’s students are from RCCM. "CBF of Missouri’s modest monthly contribution to Yvonne Dennis and RCCM is going to impact a huge number of people all around the country this summer," notes Phillips.

"Students fill vital needs on the field," said Amy Derrick, the Fellowship’s Global Service Corps and Student.Go selection manager. "There are ministries that simply would not happen if these students were not there. We are amazed every year at the ways that God uses summer and semester Student.Go personnel in the lives of those with whom they minister. But we are equally amazed at how the Holy Spirit works in the lives of the students through these experiences."

For example, in Los Angeles, one student will work with CBF Global Missions field personnel Aaron and Stephanie Glenn, ministering to international students. In Florida, CBF field personnel Angel and Jason Pittman will facilitate opportunities for students to work with Touching Miami with Love and Open House Ministries, partner organizations that reach out to the poor and homeless. And in Africa, one student will work alongside CBF field personnel Fran and Lonnie, participating in HIV/AIDS support groups.

Students from Missouri who are serving this summer are:

• Ashleigh Day, Hazelwood, Mo., serving with Open House Ministries in Florida

• Gloria Day, Hazelwood, Mo., serving with Sowing Seeds of Hope in Alabama

• Allison Lange, St. Louis, Mo., serving with Sowing Seeds of Hope in Alabama

• Katherine Preston, Jefferson City, Mo., serving as field coordinator for day camp ministries in Brooklyn, N.Y.

• David Sistler, Columbia, Mo., working with internationals in Los Angeles, Calif.

• Whitney Thomason, Fairfield, Ill., serving with Touching Miami with Love in Florida

Student.Go provides a $1,000 stipend, secondary insurance, room and board, local transportation at the ministry site, travel to orientation and secondary insurance. CBF of Missouri provides an additional $1,000 stipend for students from Missouri.
