Seminar Focus is Practically Missional If Kathy Pickett’s experience is any indication, many church members are confused about the difference between Missions and being Missional. "People often ask me to explain the idea of Missional Church," say Pickett, who serves as Pastor of Youth and Missions at Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City. "Doing missions is a ministry within the church that serves a specific purpose. Being missional means that everything the individual does and the church does – including finances, property, and organizational structure – is based on ‘Being the presence of Christ.’" A Leadership Seminar preceding the CBF of Missouri General Assembly on April 27 in Lee’s Summit focused attention on practical ways for churches to become more missional. Led by Bo Prosser, CBF’s coordinator for Congregational Life, the interactive seminar helped attendees explore ways to incorporate missional activity into their churches and personal lives. "I was expecting a pat on the back for missional giving and doing," said Bill Horn, pastor of Church of the Abundant Life in Kansas City. "Instead, Bo Prosser challenged me to the next level of being missional: challenging every church member – not just the leaders – to follow their passion." "The missional journey is contextual," Prosser believes. "We must continually be asking, ‘Where have we seen God at work in our community and in our world and how can we join God in this work!’" |
