PASSPORTkids Will Rock Windermere This Summer

PASSPORTkids is getting ready to rock Missouri this summer with a children’s camp for students who have completed 3rd through 6th grade. The camp, which is supported by CBF of Missouri and the Baptist General Convention of Missouri, will be held at Windermere Conference Center near Camdenton on July 26-29. Registration cost is $220 per person.

The theme for the camp is Rock & Roll, urging participants to consider how God is like a Rock. As campers learn that God is dependable, encouraging, and a source of strength and hope, they will build their faith on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ! In addition to having fun, the goals of the camp are to provide encounters with Christ and opportunities for faith expression, to build esteem in every child, to nurture community, and to explore the Gospel through mission interaction.

Philadelphia Ard will be the preacher during the PASSPORTkids camp. "Philly" is student at McAfee School of Theological Education in Atlanta, GA.

"I am very excited about the four people who have said yes to preaching at our camps this summer -- all of them women," exclaims PASSPORT president David Burroughs. "One way we can help more churches become comfortable with the idea of a woman serving as a local church pastor is to model that view in the ‘pulpit’ of our youth and children’s camps."

Each year, PASSPORTkids camp has a specific mission focus. Campers have been learning over the past three years to pay attention to those on the fringes of society. The children have "traveled" to a Romany fair, a Balinese festival, and a Kenyan village market. This year they will encounter the Hilltribe people of Thailand, once known as the Rock People. They are among the poorest of the poor and are isolated by geography, language and citizenship issues.

Scott Harrison, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lee’s Summit, visited the Hilltribes two years ago. "I found the Hilltribe people of Thailand to be warm, friendly folks who want to belong to and contribute to their country. They are people who, through no fault of their own, are displaced and disconnected," he said. Following Harrison’s visit, the church contributed several thousand dollars to help some of the Hilltribe people gain citizenship in Thailand.

CBF field personnel Rick and Ellen Burnette have ministered to the Hilltribes for nearly thirteen years. They have established the Uplands Holistic Development Project (UHDP), which provides an agricultural training center, citizenship advocacy, and construction of water systems. The 2007 PASSPORTkids missions offering will go to a UHDP project called "Helping Others Help Themselves," which will help Hilltribe people start businesses to raise livestock and crops or make and sell handicrafts.
