Making a Difference
By Harold A. Phillips

Last weekend 37 persons from Arizona to Georgia convened in Helena Arkansas to discuss Open Hands Enterprises, a not-for-profit group that grew out of CBF’s Together for Hope rural poverty initiative. Participants were business and entrepreneurial men and women who want to create employment in the 20 poorest counties of America. Half the group stayed in an old mansion now used as a bed and breakfast. Our conversations went past midnight wondering how we could be useful in such an ambitious quest. We ate lots of barbeque and drank sweet tea. We talked a lot. At one point tempers got short. The meeting ended on Saturday afternoon.

What will emerge?

A national framework for business and entrepreneurial men and women to engage in creative business planning and job creation. Chris Thompson, a real estate attorney from Liberty, will be the key leader in this process.

A new business in Helena that will manufacture affordable housing. That new business will employ at least eight people at a livable wage. In rural communities good jobs are created one at a time — not 1000 at a time.

This gathering of 37 persons from across the U.S. was about making a difference. It did.

Where are you today? Not in Helena eating barbeque and drinking sweet tea! But, you, too, can make a difference. God’s Spirit works within us so you and I can be the presence of Christ wherever we are. Christ was present in Helena Arkansas last weekend. The presence of Christ is wherever two or more are gathered in His name.
