Being
Together "It’s not so much that you did something significant; it’s that you were present." Last week I heard this statement at a Christian Churches Together meeting that marked the formal celebration of 36 Christian groups banding together to celebrate our common faith in Jesus Christ. Catholic, Orthodox, Pentecostals and Evangelicals, historic protestant denominations, and racial and ethnic groups – celebrating Jesus. I wrote a summary of this experience and it is posted on our website or I will mail you a copy. Then there is the New Baptist Covenant. It is an event in Atlanta next January. Daniel Vestal observes that "For the healing of the nation and the healing of the world, we as Baptists have to experience our own healing. I think this represents a step, an effort, a commitment to bring healing between us, renewal between us — black and white Baptists, North and South Baptists, and, frankly, conservative and moderate Baptists. There is great power in that healing." The event is built around Luke 4:18-19. Finally, the CBF of Missouri Assembly in Lee’s Summit in two months. We celebrate our commitment to KidsHeart Africa. We gather as the gathering point for Baptists committed to respect for the local church and a passion for missions. I ask you to pray for these three events – one is ecumenical for the Christian family (Christian Churches Together). Another is for healing and renewal among Baptists (the New Baptist Covenant). A third is for Christians like us in Missouri. What we do may or may not be significant. Our being present with and among each other is very important. Wherever you are this week, you are the presence of Christ. |
