From the Coordinator

In golf a mulligan means taking a second swing at the ball. For me a mulligan happens when I completely miss the ball (how embarrassing), or watch an uninspiring 20-yard drive sending the ball dribbling down the fairway or completely losing a golf ball in tall grass or a pond.

Taking a mulligan is embarrassing. It is an obvious acknowledgement of a mess-up or a boo-boo. Wonder how many churches could benefit if leaders could ask one another after a clunky decision: "Could we take a mulligan" (and let’s try again)? It calls for repentance requested and forgiveness given.

The same is true for friendships and marriages and vocations.

I recall watching an interview with a high official who commented (with perceived humility) that he was grateful for a "God of Second Chances."

A mulligan is a golfer’s word for "grace" – undeserved kindness. I hope to give out several "mulligans" in my relationships this year. Even more, I hope to receive more mulligans than I deserve.

Each day I awaken and am aware of God’s gift to each of us through Jesus Christ – "you want to take a mulligan."

May God bless you and your church in 2007. Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Missouri wants to be a valued partner on your journey.
