Kansas City Church Impacts Small Kentucky Town

Nada: (NAH da) - a Spanish word meaning nothing. (NAY da) - A poor rural community in Powell County, Kentucky.

For the little town of Nada Kentucky having almost nothing must seem like a cruel pun. What the town lacks in wealth it makes up for in natural beauty. Nestled in the mountains of the Daniel Boone National Forest, this town of 200 residents takes pride in its natural spring waters, its warm hospitality, and its famed Nada Tunnel.

For members of Englewood Baptist Church in Kansas City, the town has become a place of growth and ministry. This summer, a team from Englewood traveled to Nada to work with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Together for Hope Rural Poverty Initiative. The team enjoyed a week of service and relationship building with the community.

For mission team member Karen Trischler, the highlight of the trip was a community rummage sale organized and run by the team and filled with items donated by Englewood church members. "People were shopping constantly all day long, and the looks on their faces when we told them that everything was a dime can only be described as disbelief," she noted. "I felt that for a short time we had nailed it. What we supplied perfectly matched a need of theirs." The rummage sale proceeds – over $130 – benefited the Nada Mission Church.

In addition to the rummage sale, the group also offered times of fellowship and recreation, including a Vacation Bible School, a Family Movie Night, a Community Cookout, and swimming.

Although the team went to serve Nada, their most fond memories are of the warm and friendly people of the Nada community sharing their lives with the team. "Many people, ranging from kids to adults, asked us to come back next year. I don’t think there could be a greater compliment," notes Trischler.

Englewood Baptist plans to continue a partnership with the Kentucky Together for Hope initiative. They also hope to transfer the knowledge they gained from their trip to current ministries in their Kansas City community.
