Missourian Releases Community Development Book Doris Littrell, a community development consultant for Together for Hope, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s rural poverty initiative, has recently released "Practicing Community Development," a resource book focusing on the ethical and practical aspects of community development. Doris Littrell, a member of
"We saw a need for people in communities and the people who work with them to have basic information about what community development is and how to do it," Littrell said. "There is also a major need for a current textbook that can be used across the board by people in the field." In the book, the Littrells define community development as "people coming together to decide what they want their community to be in the future and learning to work together to accomplish their goals." "Even the poorest people have assets they can bring to the community development process," Littrell said. "We and the other TFH people work along with community people to reach their goals. We encourage our churches and volunteers to work with rather than doing for people – moving from charity to community development." Using their collective more than 45 years of community development experience, the Littrells explore how to help community members implement their visions, including examples of people coming together to work through challenges. The book "maintains the integrity of the discipline and welcomes the newcomer," said TFH national coordinator Tom Prevost. "It guides the practitioner, whether that person is initially an outsider or an aspiring insider. Don and Doris Littrell make community development accessible and practicable, a worthy legacy." In addition to serving as a
foundational textbook for community development study, the book is for
community members and the people in agencies, government and nonprofit
organizations who work with them. For more information on the book, visit http://extension.missouri.edu/explore/commdm/dm7616.htm. |
