From the Coordinator What does a long time look like? For me, it’s a retirement party for Michael and Nan Olmsted as they bring an almost 22-year tenure of ministry at University Heights Church to a close. Twenty-two years takes us back to Ronald Reagan as President, no Missouri State University (it was SMSU back then), no email, no cell phones, and our daughter Rachel’s birth year. For 22 years, Michael and Nan served University Heights, the campus, Green County Baptist Association, and Baptists in Missouri (through the MBC and CBF of Missouri). The church was filled with current and former members and friends. A thick book of good memories was presented to Michael and Nan. Longevity provides a gift of relationships that stand the test of time. Returning home, I thought of the CBF of Missouri values that are built on longevity as well. Our 20-year commitment to partnering with 20 poor counties in America is not a quick-fix. The same is true of our partnership with Buckner Orphan Care through KidsHeart Africa. The same is true of our commitment to the emerging generation of church leaders. And for pastors and staff, who like Michael and Nan, serve faithfully and too often with too little support and encouragement. Longevity—it provides the gift of deep and trusting relationships. |
