Church Partners to Offer Theological Education for Laity

For the past two years, Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City has partnered with The Baptist Laity Institute to give its members access to theological education. Using Baptist Laity Institute materials and college- or seminary-level textbooks, church staff and other seminary-trained church members have led classes ranging from Introduction to Theology to Christian Ethics.

"The classes are a wonderfully rich experience," says Kathy Pickett, Associate Pastor of Youth and Missions at Holmeswood, who facilitated the Introduction to Theology course. "Participants really gain a broader understanding of theological issues."

Without using tests or papers, classes introduce students in the local church to higher-level biblical and theological education. Each course is held for two hours per week for 12 weeks. Participants pay for their own textbooks plus a $50 course fee.

While the content can be challenging, the benefit to participants and churches is definitely worthwhile.

"Classes like this strengthen our faith and help us understand – or remember – why we are who we are," offered one student. "I have thought more about my relationship with God and what it means to me to be a Christian."

Baptist Laity Institute courses include: Introduction to New Testament Studies, Introduction to Old Testament Studies, Church History to the Reformation, Baptist Faith and Distinctives, Introduction to Theology, Introduction to Christian Ethics, Lay Pastoral Care, Missions and Evangelism, and World Religions.
